The One Thing by Gary Keller is a popular book on goal setting and making progress towards your goals. While it has some fantastic tips and ideas, I think it is an oversimplification. I much prefer a generalist approach, as advocated in Range by David Epstein. The goal should be to build multiple skillsets so that you can be dynamic in an ever changing world. But with either approach, you have to have an overarching target, a motivation to strive for. Whatever you work on should get you closer to that target, whether it’s working on one thing or multiple.
